Kosher kitchen electrics

A kosher kitchen is really two kitchens sharing a room, and it needs the electrics to match: enough circuits for two ovens, two hobs and two dishwashers, sockets where the urn and hot plate actually live, and lighting that works on Shabbat without anyone touching a switch. We plan it with you and your kitchen fitter before the units go in.

Circuits for two of everything

  • A cooker circuit for each oven or hob, sized to the appliance.
  • A dedicated circuit or fused spur for each dishwasher, plus the fridge, freezer and any second fridge.
  • Enough socket circuits that the urn, hot plate, mixer and kettle can all run together on a Friday afternoon.
  • A consumer unit with the spare ways to do it properly — often the board needs upgrading at the same time.

Sockets and timers where they are needed

We place the urn and hot plate socket where they stand all weekend, on a timer if you want it, rather than trailing leads across the worktop. Under-cabinet lighting can go on the same timer as the main kitchen lights.

A Pesach kitchen

Many families set up a second kitchen for Pesach in a utility room, garage or basement. That needs its own cooker circuit, sockets and lighting, and in a garage proper RCD protection. It is notifiable work, so we certify and register it.

Certification

Kitchen electrics are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. As a NICEIC registered firm we self-certify, register the work with the council and email you the certificate — the paperwork you will need when you sell or let.

FAQs

Kosher kitchen electrics — your questions

Does a kosher kitchen need a bigger fuse board?
Often, yes. Two cooker circuits, two dishwasher circuits and extra sockets quickly use up the spare ways on an old board, and an old board without RCD protection should be replaced anyway. We tell you honestly if yours is fine.
Can you work with my kitchen fitter?
Yes — most kitchen jobs are done that way. We do the first fix before the units go in and the second fix once the worktops are on, and we coordinate the dates with the fitter.
Can the dishwashers be on one circuit?
They can, but we usually give each its own so a fault on one never takes out the other.
