Moving to London from Israel: a guide to your home’s electrics

London homes are wired differently from Israeli ones, and the rules about who can do what are stricter. This is the short version of what Israeli families ask us most, from a NICEIC registered firm that works for many Israeli households in St John’s Wood, Hendon, Golders Green and across north-west London.

The fuse board and the EICR

UK homes have a single-phase supply and a consumer unit, not the three-phase board common in Israel. If you are renting, the landlord must give you an EICR — an electrical safety report less than five years old — before you move in. If you are buying, get one done before exchange; it tells you what the house really needs.

Israeli appliances

  • Israel and the UK both use 230 V 50 Hz, so most appliances work — the plug is the difference.
  • We fit UK plugs or a fused connection to appliances brought from Israel rather than relying on adaptors, especially for anything with a heater or motor.
  • Large three-phase appliances will not run on a normal UK supply; check before shipping.

Bathrooms, kitchens and the rules

UK bathrooms have no ordinary sockets and strict zones for lights and switches, which surprises many people. Kitchens, bathrooms and new circuits are notifiable work that must be certified and registered. As a NICEIC registered firm we do that for you.

Settling in

Most families need the same first few jobs: more sockets, a timer for the hall lights, a second oven, an outdoor socket. WhatsApp us photos of the fuse board and the room and we price it from there.

FAQs

Moving to London from Israel — your questions

Will my Israeli appliances work in London?
Most will, because both countries use 230 V 50 Hz. They need a UK plug or a fused connection fitted, which we do. Three-phase appliances will not run on a normal UK supply.
What is an EICR and do I need one?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report — a safety inspection of the wiring. Landlords in England must provide one to tenants; buyers are wise to get one before exchange. We issue them with a plain-English verdict.
Can I message you in Hebrew?
You can send what you like on WhatsApp, including photos, and we reply in English. Photos of the fuse board and the job get you a price fastest.
