The consumer unit is the heart of your home’s electrics. If yours still has rewirable fuses, a wooden backboard or no RCD protection, it isn’t protecting you the way a modern board does — and it’s usually the first thing an EICR flags.

We replace old fuse boxes with modern metal consumer units fitted with individual RCBOs — so one fault trips one circuit, not the whole house — plus surge protection (SPD) to shield your appliances and electronics. Why RCBOs instead of a split-load board

A cheaper split-load board puts several circuits behind one shared RCD — a faulty kettle can kill the lights and the freezer at the same time. RCBOs give every circuit its own protection, so a fault only takes out the circuit it’s on. On a like-for-like day’s work the difference in cost is small and the difference in day-to-day living is big.

What the job involves

We survey the existing installation first — tails, earthing and bonding — because an old board is often hiding undersized earths or missing bonds that must be brought up to standard as part of the job. On the day we isolate, strip out the old unit, re-terminate and dress the circuits into the new board, test everything, then energise circuit by circuit.

How long will my power be off?

Typically three to five hours of the day. We plan the changeover so the fridge, freezer and any home-working kit are back on as early as possible.

Do I legally need to upgrade my fuse box?

There’s no law that forces an upgrade on its own, but an old board with no RCD protection will usually come back as C2 (potentially dangerous) on an EICR — which does matter if you’re letting or selling the property.

Will you certify the work?

Yes. You get an Electrical Installation Certificate and the work is notified under Building Regulations through our registration, so the paperwork stands up when you sell or re-mortgage.

What is surge protection and do I need it?

An SPD absorbs voltage spikes from the grid or nearby lightning before they reach your electronics. With the amount of sensitive kit in a modern home, current wiring regulations expect one in most new boards — we fit them as standard.
